TITLE: Investigation of the Spread of the Bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae in Greek Kiwi Orchards and Evaluation of Cultivation and Chemical Methods for Its Control
ACRONYM: BESTCONTROL
PROJECT CODE: T1EDK-03107

Project Description:

Bacterial canker of the kiwi is caused by the bacterium Pseudomonas syringae pv. actinidiae, which infects plants of the Actinidia genus, particularly the species A. deliciosa and A. chinensis, to which most cultivated green and yellow-fleshed kiwi varieties belong. This bacterium can cause the drying of trees, leading to the complete destruction of kiwi orchards. The bacterium has been identified in Greece since 2015. The spread of this bacterium in Greek orchards, as well as methods for its control, have not been sufficiently studied in Greece or globally. The goals of the proposed study are:

  • Study of the geographic spread of the Psa bacterium in kiwi orchards in Greece.
  • Differentiation of Psa bacterium strains.
  • Study of genetic resistance of various kiwi varieties to the Psa bacterium.
  • Development of a software model for predicting the appearance of the Psa bacterium in kiwi orchards.
  • Evaluation of various products for the chemical control of the pathogen.
  • Study of the effect of various irrigation systems on the susceptibility to Psa infection.
  • Impact of irrigation systems on kiwi storage and quality.
  • Impact of nitrogen fertilization on the development of the bacterium and fruit quality.
  • Impact of summer pruning on the orchard microclimate, disease spread, and fruit quality.
